Relight your shots in Blender with Beeble AI

Thies Grünewald’s Frankenstein workflow

Sep 24, 2025

What if you could turn a flat greenscreen plate into a fully relightable shot, complete with point lights, HDRIs, cast shadows, and depth-aware displacement, without the hassle of rebuilding on-set lighting or fighting roto?

With Beeble SwitchLight 2.0 and Blender, that's exactly what VFX artist Thies Grünewald demonstrates. In this three-part tutorial, he walks through a streamlined, production-ready workflow that transforms simple plates into cinematic, relightable elements.

The process is simple:
  1. Prepare a clean plate (with a greenscreen or neutral background).

  2. Process VFX passes in Beeble (alpha, base colour, normals, roughness, specular, AO, depth, flow).

  3. Import them with the official Blender add-on, ready for instant relighting—just like working with full CG assets.

Virtual production is a more recent journey for me. I first learned about it in 2019–2020, when The Mandalorian was using LED walls. I was fascinated.

That sent me on a mission to see how I could replicate those techniques in smaller spaces — an upstairs bedroom, a living room. As I experimented, I began sharing that process on YouTube. The more I explored, the more my audience responded. It felt like the perfect way to show people that they could tell bigger stories without needing massive resources.

Building Frankenstein:
Shot Breakdown

Key learnings:
  • Crisp 2.5D elements. SwitchLight 2.0 generates relightable passes with improved normals, resulting in more realistic outcomes.

  • Seamless Blender integration. Upload footage to Beeble, auto-generate passes, then import directly into Blender with everything wired up.

  • Advanced relighting. Cast shadows and use depth features to add realism, rim lights, and dramatic lighting shifts in post-production.

Key learnings:
  • Plan with intent. Gather strong visual references, storyboard with tools like Storyboarder, and preview lighting in Beeble's app before shooting.

  • Keep it practical.  Props, costumes, and simple shoots come alive once relit in post.

  • Polish in post. Compositing, grading, and extra effects (lightning, rain, electricity) transform flat renders into cinematic shots.
